What are some of the problems?

Wisdom teeth can develop cavities and gum disease just like any other tooth. However, most frequently, problems arise simply due to not having enough room for them in the jaw. They are often partially trapped under the jawbone, gums, and/or the adjacent tooth. This can make it extremely hard to clean as food and bacteria become trapped and can cause a lot of pain, swelling and infections. In other cases, wisdom can grow out slanted and start rubbing against your cheek. This will cause mouth ulcers and chewing problems too.

You may need a wisdom teeth removal for several reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Pain or discomfort. If your wisdom teeth are causing pain or discomfort, it may be necessary to remove them.
  • Impacted teeth. Wisdom teeth that do not emerge fully from the gums can become impacted, which means they are trapped in the jawbone. This can cause pain and infection. Additionally, wisdom teeth that are impacted against the adjacent tooth can damage and even lead to pain and loss of the adjacent tooth.
  • Crowding. If there isn’t enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth, they can push against your other teeth and cause crowding.
  • Decay or gum disease. Wisdom teeth are often difficult to clean properly, leading to decay or gum disease.

You may also require these problematic teeth to be removed, to provide much needed space to assist in moving your teeth during various Orthodontics treatments; (Children Braces, Adult Braces, Invisalign).

What are the symptoms?

    • Pain in the wisdom tooth, mouth or jaw
    • Red and swollen gums around the wisdom tooth
    • Tender or bleeding gums
    • Bad breath
    • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
    • Swelling of the face
    • Difficult to open mouth or swallow

You will receive anesthesia before the procedure to avoid feeling any pain. After the process, you may experience some pain and discomfort. This is quite normal and pain management can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medications.

The recovery time for wisdom teeth extraction will be different from individual to individual or the complexity of the procedure. The fact is, you could do ten very similar surgeries, on ten patients, and get wildly varying reports on the length, and discomfort of their recovery period. Generally, it takes about one to two weeks to fully recover from wisdom teeth removal, although you will get patients who have stopped taking any pain medication two days after, and others who will still require them thirteen days afterward.

We highly recommend sticking to soft foods and liquids for the first few days after the surgical procedure. You should gradually reintroduce solid foods into your diet as you feel better.
