Tooth Extraction

Why is a tooth extraction required?

Tooth Extraction may be the only solution if a tooth cannot be saved with a filling, root canal and/or crown. In some cases, leaving it can cause more harm than good. It is at this point the tooth should be removed.

You may also have an issue with your wisdom teeth. There may not be enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth, or you may be unable to clean them well which can cause a lot of pain. These are both instances where wisdom teeth should be removed.

Should I be anxious or nervous about having my tooth extracted?

All our dentists are highly skilled and qualified in the area of tooth extraction and employ modern techniques to ensure treatment is a comfortable experience, free from fear and anxiety. There are three methods to how you can have your teeth extracted.

Local Anaesthesia

Your dentist will ensure the tooth, gum and surrounding structures are numbed. With gentle pressure and possible tooth division, we lessen the force on the bone and gum which means the procedure and healing is more pleasant. In some cases, we may need to open the gum, remove infected tissues and close the area with stitches.

Please note a television is turned on for cognitive distraction and music can be requested to ensure you are even more relaxed and comfortable.

Oral Sedation

To achieve a mild form of sedation, the dentist can prescribe you an oral pill to ease anxiety and tension before the tooth extraction. This will place you in a more relaxed frame of mind during and shortly after the procedure.

Please note local anaesthesia will still be used.

Twilight Sedation

Midway Dental Clinic also offers in-house twilight sedation in order to place you in a comfortable and deep sleep during the tooth extraction. Here, a qualified dental anaesthetist visits the practice in order to administer what is also known as IV or sleep sedation.

Please note local anaesthesia will still be used.

What is the care required after a tooth extraction?

Do I need to come back in for a second appointment?

In some cases, stitches are required to improve the healing after a tooth extraction. These will need to be removed after 1-2 weeks and will allow your dentist to check the healing in the area.

What do I need to do once my tooth is extracted and the area is healed?

Losing a tooth can mean the surrounding teeth have to work harder to chew and places them at higher risk of breaking or cracking. It can also cause the surrounding teeth to tilt or fall into the missing space which can disrupt your bite. In most cases, your dentist will recommend replacing the missing tooth. These options include dentures, bridges and implants. Your dentist at Midway Dental Clinic will discuss these options with you before having your tooth removed so you know exactly what to expect.
