Plastic and Chrome Dentures

What is a denture?

A denture is a removable appliance that offers a comfortable and affordable way of replacing one, several or all your teeth at once.

What are the types of dentures?

There are two types of dentures: full and partial dentures. A full denture is indicated when all the teeth in the arch are missing and a partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. Here at Midway Dental Clinic we offer all.

What are they made from?

Dentures can be made with either a plastic or metal base.
Plastic dentures can be formed from the traditional, hard acrylic or a flexible thermoplastic known as Valplast. These flexible dentures or “flexis” are increasingly popular with single-tooth replacement as they are flexible, smooth and thin.
Metal dentures are made from a chrome-cobalt alloy which is very biocompatible with tissues and teeth. These are very useful when several teeth are missing across the arch as they are strong under biting load and thin.

How are they fitted?

Your denture can be placed in two ways. You can have it placed in the mouth on the same day you have your teeth removed or after your tissues have healed. Your dentist will either take accurate moulds or digital scans of your mouth so a specific and comfortable denture can be designed. A denture will usually require 2-5 appointments (2 weeks apart) depending on the type and extent of denture.

How do they stay in place?

A denture will use bone support, suction of the gums, palate and surrounding tissues and/or clasps fitted around adjacent teeth.

However, in some cases, where there are old, ill-fitting dentures, little bone, minimal suction or no remaining teeth, a denture will be loose. This can lead to dentures becoming loose when you talk, eat or cough. Food can become stuck underneath the denture and ulcers and sore gums can be observed.

If you present with these problems, we will recommend a few options:
