What are the benefits of traditional braces?

What are some of the common orthodontic issues braces can fix?

Crowding and crooked teeth

Crowding or crooked teeth happens when there isn’t enough space in your mouth for all your teeth to fit properly. This cn cause teeth to overlap or twist which can look unattractive. It also makes it hard to clean them and leads to problems like cavities and gum disease. This is the most common reason why patients opt for Invisalign and results tend to be faster than braces.

Spacing

Spacing occurs when there are gaps between teeth, often leading to issues with appearance and oral health. These gaps can happen due to various reasons, such as missing teeth, small teeth, tongue habits, or abnormal growth of the jawbone.

Narrow arches

Narrow arches refer to a condition where the upper or lower jaw is too narrow. This can be unattractive when smiling when less teeth are shown and more of a “black corridor” is revealed . Narrow arches can also lead to crowded teeth, difficulty chewing, speech problems, and increased risk of dental problems like cavities and gum disease.

Did you know braces also can fix bite misalignment?

Overjet (protruding teeth)

Overjet, commonly known as “buck teeth” occurs when the upper front teeth protrude significantly in front of or beyond the lower front teeth. This misalignment can affect both the appearance and function of the teeth, potentially leading to issues like eating and speech difficulties, jaw pain, and increased risk of dental damage.

Overbite

Overbite is a condition where the upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower front teeth when the jaw is closed. This misalignment can lead to issues like jaw pain, speech problems, and an increased risk of dental damage.

Underbite

Underbite, commonly known as reverse overjet, occurs when the lower front teeth protrude past the upper front teeth when the jaw is closed. This misalignment can cause problems with chewing, speech, and facial appearance.

Open bite

A dental open bite occurs when the upper and lower teeth don’t meet properly when the jaw is closed, leaving a gap between them. This misalignment can cause issues with chewing, speech, and can even lead to jaw pain.

Crossbite

A dental crossbite occurs when some upper back teeth sit behind the lower back teeth when the jaw is closed. This misalignment can lead to jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and uneven tooth wear.

How can I start my orthodontic journey?

First visit

Your orthodontic journey will start with your first consultation. We will dedicate time to listen to your concerns and your preferred outcome, and then recommend the best orthodontic treatment plan. A set of full orthodontic records will be taken including photos, x-rays and a digital scan of your teeth. These records will be tracked and diagnosed to assist the dentist to thoroughly plan the stages of treatment.

Second visit

The dentist will bond the brackets and fix the wire onto your teeth. You will be provided strict instructions including how to take care of your braces and teeth.

You will be required to visit your dentist every 4-6 weeks for adjustments to the brackets and/or wires.

After you have completed your orthodontic treatment, you will be provided with fixed and removable retainers and at-home ZOOM teeth whitening kit.

What are the benefits of traditional braces compared to Invisalign?

While Invisalign has gained popularity in recent years, traditional braces offer unique benefits that may be perfect for you or your child. Let us explore why braces could be the ideal choice for your orthodontic journey.

Effectiveness

Braces are renowned for their effectiveness in treating a wide range of dental issues, from crowded teeth to misaligned bites. The precise control exerted by braces ensures comprehensive and reliable results, making them particularly suitable for complex cases.

Durability

Made from high-quality materials, traditional braces are durable and robust, capable of withstanding the demands of everyday life. They provide continuous pressure on the teeth, promoting steady movement and ensuring progress throughout the treatment process.

No Compliance Concerns

Unlike removable aligners, braces are bonded to the teeth, eliminating concerns about compliance and ensuring consistent treatment progress. With braces, there is no need to worry about remembering to wear aligners or the possibility of losing them.

Cost-Effectiveness

Traditional braces are often more cost-effective than Invisalign, making them an excellent option for individuals seeking an affordable orthodontic solution without compromising on quality or results.

Suitable for All Ages

While Invisalign may not be suitable for children or individuals with severe orthodontic issues, braces are versatile and can be used to address the needs of patients of all ages, ensuring everyone can achieve a beautiful, healthy smile.

How do I keep my teeth from crowding or moving again after braces?

After completing your braces, it’s crucial to maintain the results to prevent teeth from shifting back. Retainers play a vital role in this process. There are two main types of retainers: fixed and removable.

Fixed retainers

Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth, keeping them in place. They are convenient because you don’t have to remember to put them in, but they require diligent oral hygiene to prevent plaque buildup.

Removable retainers

Removable retainers are custom-made devices that you wear over your teeth. These are usually worn at night and can be easily taken out for eating and cleaning.

Both types of retainers help ensure that your teeth stay in their corrected positions, preserving your straight smile for years to come. Regular use and proper care of retainers are essential for maintaining the results of orthodontic treatment. Midway Dental Clinic includes both types of retainers and at-home ZOOM teeth whitening kits in all braces packages.

FAQs

Braces generally take 24 months to complete depending on the case type and difficulty. However, for minor alignment issues, braces can take 6 to 12 months.

The fee for braces can vary depending on the dentist’s skill, experience and type of orthodontic issue. During your first consultation, your dentist will ensure to discuss your concerns, map out a customised treatment plan and ensure you are well informed of the costs, inclusions and length of treatment.
