What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium or titanium alloy posts anchored within jaw bone to support crowns, bridges and dentures. Dental implants are the most common and successful treatment option in replacing missing teeth as they can remain stable and long-lasting over the life of an individual. They have also proven to be safe and effective as they are free-standing and do not require adjacent teeth to support them.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants allow an individual to closely recreate the experience of having a natural-looking and natural-feeling set of teeth. Some of these benefits include:

Look & feels like natural teeth

With the latest in 3D scanning, planning and technology, we can precisely match nature in the form of tooth inclination, height, shape and colour as well as gum levels and alignment.

Avoid unnecessary dental work

As dental implants are free-standing and use the jaw bone as an anchor, we do not need to treat or use neighbouring teeth to support them.

Prevent bite disruption and collapse

Missing teeth can mean adjacent teeth can unfavourably tilt into the space which can cause your bite to collapse. This increases stress to neighbouring teeth and places them at risk of breaking and cracking. A dental implant prevents this tilt, and supports the bite and neighbouring teeth so you can enjoy eating, drinking and talking on the daily.

Preserve bone structure

Dental implants Sydney closely mimic a natural tooth and therefore stimulate the jaw bone when you eat and talk. This prevents bone beneath a missing tooth from deteriorating or “waste away”.

Gives confidence with a fixed and permanent solution

Dental implants are a fixed and permanent solution which is a significant advantage over removable dentures. This gives an individual confidence and assurance.

High success rate and long-lasting

In today’s world of technological advancement, implant placement and restoration is more accurate and reliable. Our clinic has continued to invest in equipment such as CBCT technology, CAD/CAM systems, 3D oral scanners and 3D printing in order to place dental implants with ease and precision. This means implants are more reliable and, with the right care and maintenance, can outlive the life of an individual.

How are dental implants placed? What is the process?

Dental implants are placed over two stages.

Dental Implants Sydney
Stage 1

1st Appointment – Consult, Digital Scanning and Planning

In this appointment, we will discuss the procedure and additional considerations, take full records and start planning the direction, depth and tilt of the implant.

2nd Appointment – Implant Surgery

A dental implant is placed under best clinical practice conditions and a temporary crown or bridge can be fitted. Stitches will sometimes be used.

3rd Appointment – Review

You will return 1-2 weeks later to review your healing and remove the stitches.

From this point, we allow the dental implant to heal over 3-6 months to allow for “osseointegration” which is the gradual process of the dental implant fusing with surrounding bone.

Stage 2

1st Appointment – Implant Exposure and Fitting of Healing Cap

After 3-6 months, we remove the temporary, re-enter the site, expose the implant head and fit a healing cap known as a healing abutment.

2nd Appointment – Digital Impression for Design of Fitted Crown or Bridge

After 2-4 weeks, we take a digital impression of the closed site and gum so design of the final crown or bridge can begin.

3rd Appointment – Fitting of Final Restoration

After 1-2 weeks, we trial and fixate the crown or bridge to the buried implant. After care instructions will be provided and maintenance will be discussed.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

The price of dental implants can vary depending on your individual needs. To give you a general idea, here are some estimated costs:

  • Single Tooth Implant: Generally, you can expect the cost to be between $2,000 and $3,500 for replacing one tooth with an implant.
  • Complete Single Tooth Replacement (Implant, Abutment, and Crown): The total cost for a fully restored implant, which includes the implant itself, the connector piece (abutment), and the artificial tooth (crown), typically starts at around $2,500 and can go up to $5,500.
  • Replacing Multiple Teeth with Implants: If you’re replacing several missing teeth with individual implants and crowns or a bridge supported by implants, the cost will naturally be higher, starting at about $4,000 for multiple implants.
  • Full Arch Replacement (All-on-4): For replacing a complete set of upper or lower teeth using 4 to 6 implants, the cost can range from $15,000 to $30,000 per arch and more.
  • Stabilizing Dentures with Implants: To make loose dentures more secure and comfortable with implants, the cost can start at around $6,000 per jaw. This may include bone grafting and the creation of new dentures.

What Can Affect the Cost of Dental Implants?

Several factors can influence the total price of your dental implant treatment:

  • How Complex Your Situation Is: More complex cases might require extra steps, which can affect the cost:
    • Bone Grafting: If your jawbone isn’t strong enough to support an implant, we might need to add bone, which has an additional cost (potentially $2,500 – $3,000).
    • Sinus Lift: For implants in the upper jaw, especially if there’s bone loss, a procedure called a sinus lift might be necessary, which can also increase the cost (potentially $5,000 – $10,000).
    • Tooth Removal: If the tooth being replaced still needs to be taken out, there will be an additional charge (up to $600 per tooth).
    • Treating Gum Disease: Any existing gum problems need to be addressed before placing an implant, which may involve extra costs.
  • The Number of Implants Needed: Naturally, replacing more teeth will increase the overall cost. However, placing multiple implants at the same time can sometimes be more efficient and cost-effective per tooth.
  • The Type and Brand of Implant Used: Different manufacturers and materials (like titanium or zirconia) have different costs. High-quality brands known for their research and reliability might be more expensive but can offer better long-term results.
  • The Material of the Artificial Tooth (Crown): The material used for your new artificial tooth, such as porcelain or zirconia, can affect the price based on how it looks and how long it lasts.
  • Any Additional Appointments or Procedures: The initial consultation (around $55 – $250), X-rays, and any necessary scans (around $150 – $500) are part of the planning process and contribute to the overall cost.
