Why are fissure sealants important?

Fissure sealants prevent tooth decay by creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface over the tooth’s natural grooves and fissures. If a deep pit or groove is left as is, bacteria, plaque and food particles can be trapped. These can release acids which dissolve tooth enamel and cause decay.

When are fissure sealants applied?

We recommend fissure sealants to be applied soon after the permanent molars and premolars have erupted which occur between 6-14 years of age. In some cases, fissure sealants can also be applied on baby teeth.
