Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges

What are Dental Crowns? What are Dental Bridges?

Dental Crowns are ceramic or metal shells designed to cover teeth in order to provide greater strength and an improved appearance. Dental Bridges are a fixed prosthesis used to replace missing teeth. Teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth are veneered or crowned, and ‘bridged’ together to hold a natural-looking and artificial tooth or segment of missing teeth.

What are the reasons for Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges?

Can there be different types of Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges?

Yes, there are multiple types of Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges available to us. The most common ones in use are monolithic zirconia, PFZ (porcelain fused to zirconia), porcelain (ceramic), PFM (porcelain fused to metal) and gold. Your dentist will discuss these options with you and provide recommendations.

How many visits are required for a Dental Crown or Dental Bridge?

Depending on the procedure and type of crown material, a Dental Crown or Dental Bridge can take one or two visits.

One-visit

Midway Dental Clinic houses highly specialised and computerised equipment, known as Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic or CEREC, which allows the preparation and delivery of the final crown or bridge all in one visit.

Two-visit

This is the more traditional method of crown and bridge work. However, we no longer take a manual impression of the mouth and instead use digital scans to communicate with our laboratories.

What is the difference between Dental Crowns and Dental Veneers?

Dental Crowns are tooth-coloured shells which encase or cover all surfaces of a tooth. Dental Veneers are tooth-coloured shells or facings bonded to the front of your teeth, similar to how a fake nail is attached. Dental Crowns are preferred for back teeth where strength and durability is required.

How long do Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges last?

Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges have a general lifespan of 5-10 years. However, without proper care and maintenance, they can suffer chips, cracks and develop decay underneath. We recommend regular check ups, avoiding excessive chewing or biting on hard objects like ice, bone and nails and having a night-guard or splint made for added protection during sleep.
